How to Become a DSA Approved Driving Instructor (Car)

THE ADI exam is comprised of three separate tests. These must be taken in sequential order and are usually referred to as the ADI Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3. All three tests must be passed within two years of passing the Part 1 test.

ADI Part 1 - the ADI Theory Test

This test comprises 100 multiple-choice questions which cover ten subject groups in four bands. The pass mark is 85%. You must also achieve a minimum of 20 out of 25 in each band. Time allowed for completion of this test is 90 minutes. The test is IT (information technology) computer based, using a 'touch screen' system.

An audio option is available so that you can listen to, as well as see, the questions and answers. Tests are conducted at approximately 158 centres around the UK. You will be notified of the result as soon as you have finished the test. There is no limit on the number of attempts at this test.

ADI Part 2 - the ADI Eyesight Test and Test of Driving Technique

You must be able to read a number plate at a distance of 27.5m / 90ft. This compares with the standard 'L' test requirement of 20.5m / 67ft. During an hour's drive you must not commit more than six driving (less serious) faults or commit one serious or one dangerous fault. A consistently high standard is required.

Tests for parts 2 and 3 are conducted at approximately forty centres around the UK. The timing of tests is determined by waiting lists and workload in any particular area. You will be advised of the result at the end of the test. Only three attempts are allowed at this test.

ADI Part 3 - the ADI Test of Instructional Ability

For this test - lasting one hour - a supervising examiner will role-play a 'pupil' at two different levels of ability. The candidate will instruct the 'pupil' in subjects chosen by the supervising examiner. The 'instructor's' performance is assessed under three main headings: Core Competencies, Instructional Techniques and Instructor Characteristics.

Once you have had 40 hours of training at part 3, you have the opportunity to start teaching and earning. You can apply for a trainee licence from the DSA – often referred to as a’ pink badge’.

When you have satisfied all the above criteria and paid the registration fee you will be sent a Certificate of Registration - often referred to as the 'green badge' - which must be displayed in the lower left corner of the windscreen when professional tuition is being given.

Registration lasts for four years and is renewable on payment of a fee

Whilst on the Register, ADIs are required to undergo periodic 'Tests of Continued Fitness and Ability to Instruct' - usually called check tests - during which their teaching will be assessed and marked. If certain standards are not reached this could ultimately lead to removal from the Register.
