The Practical Test Can you drive safely without supervision on the roads? This is what your practical test needs to show, unless you have this ability you will not pass your test. Dont be tempted to take your test before you are ready youll just end up wasting your money and knocking your confidence. Your Fifth Gear instructor will advise you when you are ready to book your test. The DSA will send you an appointment card a few weeks prior to your test confirming all the details, keep this somewhere safe you will need it on the day of your test along with your driving licence and theory test certificate. The Practical lasts approx. 40 minutes and is conducted by a DSA examiner at your local driving test centre. You will be asked to read a car number plate from a distance, then two questions relating to car safety & maintenance known as show & tell. The examiner will take you on one of a number of test routes and he/she will assess your driving ability, competence, and safety. If you commit either a dangerous, serious or more than 15 minor driving faults this will result in a fail. To maximise your chances of passing your practical test Your Fifth Gear instructor will arrange for you to have a mock test with another qualified driving instructor if you drive the way your Fifth Gear instructor has taught you, you should have no problems in passing your test.
