The Theory Test

The Theory test is divided into two parts - The multiple choice theory test and the Hazard Perception theory test.

To pass the theory test you need to provide correct answers to at least 43 out of 50 multiple choice questions across a wide range of driving and road safety topics.Risk perception is an important part of your theory test and is essential to safe driving.

The Hazard Perception theory test involves watching a number of video clips and identifying hazards that require you to take action, like changing speed or direction. The earlier the developing hazard is spotted the higher your score. Pass mark is 44 out of a possible 75, both parts must be passed at the same sitting.

Theory tests are taken at your local theory test centre using a computer touch screen. The maximum time to complete the multiple choice section of the theory test is 57 minutes.

The Practical Test

Can you drive safely without supervision on the roads? This is what your practical test needs to show, unless you have this ability you will not pass your test. Dont be tempted to take your test before you are ready you will just end up wasting your money and knocking your confidence. Your Fifth Gear instructor will advise you when you are ready to book your test. The DSA will send you an appointment card a few weeks prior to your test confirming all the details, keep this somewhere safe  you will need it on the day of your test along with your driving licence and theory test certificate.

The Practical lasts approx. 40 minutes and is conducted by a DSA examiner at your local driving test centre. You will be asked to read a car number plate from a distance, then two questions relating to car safety & maintenance known as show & tell. The examiner will take you on one of a number of test routes and he/she will assess your driving ability, competence, and safety. If you commit either a dangerous, serious or more than 15 minor driving faults this will result in a fail. To maximise your chances of passing your practical test Your Fifth Gear instructor will arrange for you to have a mock test with another qualified driving instructor  if you drive the way your Fifth Gear instructor has taught you, you should have no problems in passing your test.
